Reception Theory

RECEPTION THEORY

1. Preferred reading of media text is the message that the producer wants to portray to the audience.

2. Oppositional reading is when the audience ignore the meaning the producer is trying to give and          instead using their beliefs and values come up with another meaning.

3. The audience will respond to the teenage character in this film in a negative way. This is because        in the trailer the teenagers are presented in a negative way connoting their aggressive and                    malicious  attitude.

4. A younger audience would reject this reading and construct an oppositional reading of the trailer        because the trailer is suggesting that  "all" young people are troublesome and aggressive, which is      false. The soft ,  kind young people would feel offended by this therefore changing their thought to      the negative side of the trailer.

5. A preferred reading of this advert is that the product looks very tasty and is very appealing. The           phrase " A meal disguised as a sandwich" shows that the product is very filling as it is described as     a whole meal. An oppositional reading of the advert is that it could be over exaggerating , this is         because people know that in real life the product never looks the same .An negotiated reading             would be that the product appeals to most people but the product is also very unhealthy for people.

6. A preferred reading of this advert is that the game looks extremely fun and entertaining but an
oppositional reading of this game is that it influences violence. The use of guns and killing can
cause children to become very violent in the future.A negotiated reading of this would be that
the game is a source of entertainment targeted towards teens but the violence part of the game can
significantly change the behaviour of the people who play the game long enough.
